WDI co-produced and curated Flash:Light, a festival of light, sound, performance and projection art for the New Museum’s Ideas City Festival. Flash:Light represented a new platform for artists working in light, sound, performance and projection art to transform an iconic New York City neighborhood into a spectacular theater of site-specific public art.

Installations, performances and projections transformed the New Museum’s facade, St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, a pedestrianized Mulberry Street and adjacent pubs and public space with artist interventions. After six weeks of debate around the Festival themes, eighteen international artists created new works for Mulberry Street in transition—replete with dumpsters, scaffolding, sheathing, and blank walls—transforming it into a contemplative gallery of exploration.

let us make cake

Let Us Make Cake was a collaborative projection created expressly for the façade of the New Museum. Dozens of artists were asked to interact with scale models of the New Museum ranging in size from 11 inches to 11 feet, embracing the museum as both a canvas and vessel. The resulting footage was projection-mapped onto the museum, marking the first time projection has been used to animate the entire 174-foot facade and rendering the artist’s hand monumental on this downtown landmark.

creation

Creation, a groundbreaking video installation by Marco Brambilla, was presented for the first time in 3D, creating an engrossing experience inside the historic St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral accompanied by a nomadic vocal ensemble of 60 singers.
